Cadence Court

4-  3-hour sessions

Session 1

Introduction, practice and sewing. Please bring your fabric, pattern book and sewing supplies.

Instructor will provide a practice kit so that beginning students and experienced students can learn basic techniques or reinforce their skills.
As part of the class fee, a full set of pre-printed and organized foundation templates will be provided. This will guarantee ample time for sewing during our first class.

All measurements will be provided for cutting background fabrics.*

Instructions for cutting each wedge are included in the pattern*

*Cutting measurements for all fabrics are included in the pattern.   If a student wants to pre-cut their fabric, please cut only the colored fabrics. There is a simplifier method for cutting the background fabrics which will be provided at the beginning of the class.

Supply list*

  • Pattern – “Cadence Court” by Sassafras Designs – every student in required to have their own pattern.
  • Sewing machine in good order
  • Foot pedal and cord
  • Add a Quarter Ruler - I recommend the newest version which is a 6” and 12” included in one package – these rulers have a beveled edge which gives extra accuracy when cutting
  • Schmetz Chrome 70/10 Microtex needles
  • Purple Thang – a great tool that can be used as a stiletto, and the essential tool to remove the foundation papers after the units are sewn
  • Aurifil thread 50 weight – taupe or light grey are good choices for paper piecing and finishing
  • 3” x 10” Plastic template (instructor will provide)
  • Pins…I prefer short, thin pins or Flower Pins which have a flat head
  • Rotary cutter with a new blade….28mm size preferred
  • Rotary mat
  • 6 x 12 ruler
  • Small travel iron and ironing mat
  • Small scissors…curved scissors are great for safe cutting of your threads
  • Shears – just in case
  • Freezer paper for templates

*Please note…most items on the supply list are available at Sewing Machines Plus

This project is a great stash buster…no need to pre-cut your fabrics. Or, you can design your own colorway and use shades of one color or do a scrappy look. Instructor is always happy to help in fabric selection and there are many ideas in the pattern.

Materials Needed (as illustrated in the pattern) – these are suggestions only. Use your imagination.

Fat eighths of 24 assorted fabrics or colors (since fat eighths are often difficult to find) I suggest ¼ yard cuts

1-5/8 yards total of 3 background fabrics

1-3/8 yards of a light fabric (includes binding)

7/8 yards of a medium fabric

1 ½ yards of a dark fabric

3-3/4 yards of backing fabric

Instructor Name:
Donna Johnson
Instructor Bio:
I have been sewing since age 7. I learned to sew on a Singer Featherweight and have been quilting since 1987. I taught myself paper piecing and did my first full size paper pieced quilt in 2005. I have won numerous ribbons at the San Diego County Fair for my quilts including two Donated Awards for excellence in technique and color selection. In February 2018, I attended Quiltworx University and spent a week with Judy Neimeyer (principal and designer)of Quiltworx where I learned the latest skills in organizing, fabric selection, cutting and assembly. I am an accomplished seamstress and have done smocking, French heirloom sewing, fine needlepoint and counted canvas work, knitting and crochet.

I love to share my knowledge and experience and I can guarantee that students will find the class a fun experience where you will learn a lot, make new friends and have fun doing it
