zcancelled MB Precision Paper Piecing w/Donna - Sampler Quilt

Always wanted to learn paper piecing but feel intimidated…this is a perfect class.  Paper piecing is a precision technique that allows a quilter to create perfect points that will come in handy for this amazing quilt Sampler.
In this class you will learn:

  •          How to precision cut your fabric pieces that are sewn to the foundation papers
  •          How to use the “Add a Quarter ruler”
  •          How to understand the foundation paper template and what the markings mean…step by step instructions
  •          Creating a color chart
  •          How to organize the project before sewing
  •          Chain piecing
  •          Curved piecing
  •          How to make bias

This is a 3 session (3 month) class but feel free to jump in at any time. Each class is a stand alone class.

Detailed cutting instructions will be provided in class for all sessions.

Session 1 –    Square in a Square – 6 blocks (page 18),  Pineapple – 2 blocks (page 26)

Session 2 -    Kaleidoscope – 4 blocks (page 32), New York Beauty – 4 blocks – (Page 39)

Session 3 –    Basket- 4 blocks (Page 44), Flying Geese Border- 18 units (Page 25)

Bring the following supplies to each class:

To prepare for Session 1 – copy the required number of foundation units onto newsprint or paper piecing paper (available through the shop)

  • Add a Quarter ruler – I recommend the newest version which is a 6” and 12” included in one package – these rulers have a beveled edge which gives extra accuracy when cutting
  • 3”x10” plastic template – heavy duty plastic
  • Schmetz Chrome 70/10 Microtex needles
  • Purple Thang – a great tool that can be used as a stiletto, and the essential tool to remove the foundation papers after the units are sewn
  • Fabric Glue – recommend Sewline – be sure it is fabric glue which is water soluble
  • Aurifil or cotton quilting thread 50 weight – taupe or light grey are good choices for paper piecing
  • Pins…I prefer short, thin pins or Flower Pins which have a flat head
  • Rotary cutter with a new blade….28mm size preferred
  • Rotary mat
  • 6 x 12 ruler
  • Small travel iron and ironing mat
  • Small scissors…curved scissors are great for safe cutting of your threads
  • Shears – just in case
  • Plastic sandwich bags to organize your project
  • Tape
  • Small plastic basket for scraps
  • Sewing machine in good working order.
  • 1” three ring binder with plastic sheet covers – to organize the pattern.
  • Fabric of your choice…this project is a “stash buster” but you will need to have extra yardage for your background, back, borders.  Use fabric from your stash and do a “scrappy” look or pick coordinated fabrics for a more planned look…your choice.
  • Fabric required: (see page 46)
2 yards total of a variety of light colored fabrics
½ yard total of a variety of medium colored fabrics
1¼ yard total of a variety of dark colored fabrics
          ¼ yard inner border
          1 ¼ yard backing
          1/3 yard binding
