Beginning Serger Garments w/Candace

You have a serger and perhaps a cover-stitch machine.  Now what? Join Candace each month to learn tips and techniques for using your serger to make basic knit garments. We will select a different garment each month and utilize time-saving techniques to make serging easy and fun. This class is designed for the beginning serger but everyone is welcome to join in this fun social serging class.

 In October Joggers or Lounge pants perfect for the coming colder months. Choose from the following patterns: The Carita Joggers or Portlanders pants from New Horizon Pattern company. They are both comfy enough to wear around the house yet versatile enough to wear out and about. Patterns Come in sizes xx-small, x-small, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26. Minimal fitting required.

Or choose Jaycee’s Women’s joggers from CKC patterns. The pattern includes optional waist and leg drawstrings and optional pockets. Sizes XXS to 3X

 Fabric suggestions include: Stretch fabric with at least 35% stretch. Medium weight Knits with good drape such as: Poly Blends, Rayon Spandex, French Terry, Cotton Lycra, Jersey, Cotton Interlock, Liverpool

 ** If you miss one of the other Beginning Serger classes you can work on that project during class
such as the Be You Tee or Starstruck Tee from Pattern Emporium (these patterns are on sale)

Print your pattern: Print your pattern on your home printer or send the AO file to www.pdfplotting.com to have it printed on large paper. (contact me with questions)

 Bring the following supplies to class:

  •          Pattern printed and taped together (there will not be time to do this in class)
  • Serger with power supply and foot pedal and threading chart
  • 4 spools of serger thread to complement your fabric choice (threads do not have to be the same colors but should complement your fabric)
  • Serger Feet: Standard Foot or Clear foot or Open-Toe Foot or Teflon Foot
  • Needles: ELx705 needles or Jersey/Ballpoint needles size 80/12 or 90/14
  • Cover Stitch Machine for topstitching pockets with at 2 spools of serger thread that complement the fabric.
  • Sewing notions for cutting, marking, and pinning fabric (Clover Clips recommended instead of pins). Double-eye needle, tweezers, scissors, fabric glue.
  • Pattern weights helpful for cutting out fabric
  • SewKeys E double-sided fusible tape (green package) ½ inch to fuse Pockets and hem in place before serging
  • Fabric: see pattern for yardage – around 2 yards plus optional contrasting fabric for waistband and pockets and bands.
    • Recommend Ponte or other fabric with at least 50% stretch for the waistband as it has structure and support (no elastic needed.)
  • If making the drawstring, you will need
    • 2 eyelets or grommets and
    • medium weight fusible interfacing pieces to reinforce the holes.
