Watermelon Placements
Welcome to Summer 2019 with these whimsical placements that just scream outdoor dining.
Learn to paper piece and complete 6 placements perfect for all your summer parties. The pattern includes enough foundation papers to complete 6 units and during the class students will learn the technique which creates perfect points as well as curved piecing, as an added bonus, students will learn machine applique to sew the watermelon seeds.
Students will also learn how to quickly cut and organize fabrics in preparation for sewing.
Supply List:
Pattern “Watermelon Placemats”- available in store – foundation papers are included in the pattern along with laser cut fusible templates to complete the watermelon seeds
Fabric Requirements:
Melon – 1 yard
Dark green – ½ yard
Medium green – 3/8 yard
Light green – 3/8 yard
Very light green – ½ yard
Aqua blue – 7/8 yard
Or…yardage to complete the project in student’s choice of colors
Other supplies needed:
· Sewing machine in good order
· Foot pedal and cord
· Add a Quarter Ruler - I recommend the newest version which is a 6” and 12” included in one package – these rulers have a beveled edge which gives extra accuracy when cutting
· Schmetz Chrome 70/10 Microtex needles
· Purple Thang – a great tool that can be used as a stiletto, and the essential tool to remove the foundation papers after the units are sewn
· Aurifil thread 50 weight – taupe or light grey are good choices for paper piecing and finishing. Students will need a dark thread to complete the machine applique.
· 3” x 10” Plastic template (teacher will provide)
· Pins…I prefer short, thin pins or Flower Pins which have a flat head
· Rotary cutter with a new blade….28mm size preferred
· and pressing mat
· Three - 1 Gallon plastic bags
· Sharpie Marker
· Wonder clips or paper clips
· 6x12 ruler and 6 x 18 (or larger) ruler
· Small travel iron and ironing mat
· Small scissors…curved scissors are great for safe cutting of your threads
· Shears – just in case
Before class, please press and starch your fabrics. An easy way to transport your prepared fabric is to hang it on a pants hanger. This will ensure that your fabric does not get wrinkled en route.
